Who We Are

Who are the members of the Reading Group?

The reading group is made up of all sorts of people from a wide variety of backgrounds, brought together by their love of books and their interest in SciFi/Fantasy. Some have been reading SciFi for decades, others have only just discovered the genre but everyone’s opinion is equally respected. The numbers vary from 10 to 20 every month and new people are always welcome. Discussions are guaranteed to be lively, friendly, and to drift onto one or all of the following topics: Dr Who, Highlander, LARP, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore (and his crazy crazy hair), the price of beer and can a book be considered proper fantasy if it doesn’t have a map at the front.

When was the group created?

Birthday CakeThe group first met in February 2007 and we had a celebration for our first anniversary which involved some epic themed cake making, and in case any one’s wondering the little colour streaks on the cloth are laser fire, and yes I was doing the noises as I iced them out. People who come to the group are requested to put in £1 each towards room costs, any money we have left over will go to fund the next anniversary bash (or possibly go to charitable causes).

How does the group choose the books of the month?

The book of the month alternates between SciFi and Fantasy, people nominate books a month in advance, the nominations get sorted and whittled down to a short list of 3 books which the members then vote on at the meeting (we have never had a Battle Royale style show down over which book to read…yet). Occasionally we get given free proof copies of books by very nice publishing people which we read in return for reviews, we hope to do this more in future. We are always looking for new ways to find out about new and interesting titles and are open to suggestions.
